Sacred Heart Cathedral
- The Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is one of the most remarkable landmarks in Guangzhou. Situated in the bustling Yide Road area, this grand structure is the largest Gothic Revival church in Southeast Asia and one of the few in the world built entirely of granite. Due to its stunning stone construction, it is often referred to as the "Stone House" (Shishi Cathedral) by locals. Built over a period of 25 years, the cathedral was completed in 1888 under the direction of French missionaries, reflecting Guangzhou’s rich colonial and religious history.
- The exterior of the cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, featuring twin spires that rise 58 meters (190 feet) into the sky, intricate stained glass windows, and detailed stone carvings. The rose window above the main entrance is particularly impressive, showcasing vibrant colors and biblical motifs that cast breathtaking light patterns inside. The structure closely resembles some of the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe, making it a rare sight in China.
